Found this case mod linked from Slashdot and I thought, oh my. Thats one serious mod. But they guys done it all right.

Dan recently reviewed a kitten as a computer accessory. His conclusions as usual are spot on.

Also it looks like Tribes 2 is now free like Tribes 1, well according to the slashdot post about it.

The last few weeks have been very interesting at work. I now find myself not on the all staff mailing list, though no one had the maturity to let me know this. This is my last week with ISS so we’re off to the Subiaco Hotel on friday for drinks.

I bought a projector at an auction on the weekend. It’s quality on svideo and composite is pretty bad, but RGB is perfect. I was rather annoyed the svideo quality was bad because I only found that out after buying a 8 meter svideo monster2 cable ($180). So I decided to make an RGB extension (because none of mine are long enough), and I found one that uses cat5 cable to do so. I quick hack with a voodoo 1 passthrough cable and some second hand solid core cat 5 and I have a good enough (I can’t see any degradation) cable for the projector. That was the proof of concept cable, now I’ll get some decent cat5 and hd15 connectors and make a cable for keeps. The same site has some very interesting projects for the home theater hobby. Well worth a look to see how hard core some people really are. I don’t think I’m quite there yet.

I preordered one of these: Zensonic Z300 Progressive scan dvd player that plays mpeg4 and has RGB video output.

Other fun things occuring right now include dns changes. I noticed that my zone file had stopped being transfered to the secondary dns server, causing me some grief. The last transfer was a zone file from January 2004. Fixing it has involved far more changes to the zone file and record at the registry than I would have liked. This could mean dns trouble just on the horizon due to the changes. Unfortunately any dns error even if fixed right away takes days to replicate throughout the net (though the up side is if the server vanishes for days it will be a week or so before the net dumps the stale records from the cache).

Speaking of stale I should clean out my fridge.

Film: Scary Movie 3

What can I say, Charile Sheen just made this film. If you haven’t seen Signs, Matrix Reloaded, 8 Mile or The Ring don’t even bother watching it until you have. I missed seeing it in the cinema by ever so little (because I was making sure I’d seen everything it takes off) but it was worth seeing now. Sure, it’s short but it’s still funny enough. The premise of the loosely connected skits/stories lives on in the third movie with good cause.

While watching it I was reminded of many things from the naked gun, just things, nothing quite solid, but just stuff. Perhaps this was because it was directed by David Zucker (of Naked Gun fame).

Not sure if it will make it into my dvd collection eventaully, but still a solid watch.

End of April passed

I did say, Rock on end of april for a reason. The promise End of april made to me 2 months ago has not seen the light of day. Because of this, I’ve had to take things into my own hands, I’m sure the other party won’t be impressed but what will come to pass must occur (note use of future tense). All bets are off and the gloves are coming off for the rough rumble.

In the mean time, I found some funny things around but only remembered this one:

Ryano.net/iraq Examples: A, B, C, D, E, F, G (perhaps I should stop there, the message is losing meaning), among many others.

Walan went by, so did Reload, my car battery died and got replaced. Same old same old.

I watched some flicks (as shown on my recent movies list near the bottom of the page). Some were quite good, others weren’t, on average I’m feeling good about them so it’s been good recently.

In one of my bouts of depression recently I wrote these:

  • My life seems to be disappointment after disappointment, but what was I expecting.
  • My life is like a roller coaster that just isn’t fun.

When I revisited them I thought that was pretty bad and mostlikely a sign of something needing mending. So to counter this I’m going to take up a new interest and see how that pans out. Not quite sure what yet, but it will involve getting out of the house (from time to time) (I realise that doesn’t quite eliminate online gaming). Best not revist this one again then.

On the other hand, things could be on the up and up again only time will tell.

I’ve also been playing around with the Smarty template engine and I find it quite powerful and useful. There’s no need to say it’s better than mine, though I solved many of the same annoyances that Smarty does. It’s fast, well documented and easy to use. This is the best way I’ve found to separate code from formatting so far. I’ll be using it in future projects for sure.

As for C# mucking around, I hacked together a quick comic downloader to download comic archives for offline reading. It’s customisable so it can be easily updated to download different web comics (currently only 2, and one of them is the iraq pics *grin*. I’m still intending to create my own interface to the IMDB’s data files but thats been stalled by not sufficient time right now and I’m set on using the SQLite database (which doesn’t have a good (or working) ADO.net provider).

And the video stuff is currently awaiting the hopefully soon to be released xvid 1.0. Once thats done I have a batch of encoding to do. Around the same time I’ll edit up a video with the 1 hour 20 minutes of footage from the most recent walan (possibly using older footage for filler).

The sale isn’t going too well right now.
