A few people have mentioned the complete lack of me posting about them. I thought they were right, but since I have nothing overly nice or productive to say I’ll say nothing, besides it’s safer. You’re not alone ! there’s more than two of you.
What a series of long hard weeks it has been. A rather costly few weeks but lets not go there, it’s boring.
Went to the Computer/Home Theater/Home improvement expo at Burswood, and it was interesting to see how little stuff was interesting. Granted it wasn’t a totally wasted 45 minutes, it got me out of the house and I did see some cool stuff.
I noticed another really cool thing with the Cygwin shell: you can cd to (MS) network shares, fun for the whole family.
I’ve started watching Dark Angel series 2 again, now I have all the episodes I’m sure I’ll get to the end sooner or later, though everyone I’ve talked to says it’s far crappier than the first. Bugger.
Read an interesting article and most linked pages (as you do) over here: 2003 and Beyond. Lots of evil empire conspiracy theories etc, again fun for the whole family.
I also went and read most of Joel Spolsky’s articles on his site. So much of it rang true to me, right down to the Work-TV-Sleep Work-TV-Sleep cycle. Based on this site I came to the obvious realisation that my life sucks and needs mending.
On the geek front; The epia went through a recent cycle, Atheos, Syllable, Beos, and now Freebsd. I’m still yearning for a different case, sure the one I have is cool and all, but I want a smaller one, cause size does matter *grin*.
Work is busy, but talking (well typing) about that is the suxor so I won’t. Well nearly, all I want to say is my work PC runs better than my home PC by a long shot, and the work PC is only a 1ghz box.
It’s been a month since my last post. The Reload forum is still down and the reloadgaming.net domain’s dns server is unreachable (due to the box getting a rebuild this weekend).
Since I moved I again realised that I have far too much stuff, so the asset dump has begun again. This time around (more seriously than before). Lian Li PC 30’s with 470w (gold, dual fan) Topower PSUs for $280, Toshiba Libretto for $900, wireless 802.11b cards and the list goes on. Shortly the Dlink DSL 300 will be available for about $85 (not confirmed yet).
I was thinking recently about the terabyte file server idea again. More about doing it right than just doing it now, but spending money on it wouldn’t be worth it. But none the less I still went hunting for decent raid cards and mainboards. I still like the 3ware raid cards, now available in 12 channel serial ATA goodness, but with a price of over USD$650 they aren’t cheap, but serial ATA will be around for ages, and it is the fastest ATA raid card available. Pity it’s a 64bit pci card, though it apparently can run in a 32bit board, but won’t be as fast, hence mainboard hunting began. It seems to me the only way to get 64bit pci slots is to get a dual processor board (expensive, but good) and I’ve never really liked the idea of the dual athlon oven, but the boards are about $500 now, and the chips are getting cheaper. Pity I’d need new ram etc which pushes the price up to around $2000 without getting more hard drives. Then I went to ebay again for browsing, … dual p3 1.4’s are dropping in price. Then onto NAS shopping. No cheaper there either. So I’m just going to stay put and save for lappy, I’m factoring the libretto out of the needs right now. Had a few bites on the Lian Li cases, but nothing solid yet.
Grant’s barbeque was last night, and much beer was consumed.
Never underestimate the storage capacity of a shopping bag full of CDRs.
